Robert Bryden - Coylton artist
4 MayCoylton was the birthplace of one of Scotland's most celebrated artists, Robert Bryden.
Bryden was born here in 1865 but he left to study in London, at the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Academy. After graduation he travelled, visiting Italy and Spain, always sketching as he went. Eventually he returned to settle in Ayrshire and produced a vast body of work.
Bryden was highly regarded as a modeller of bronze busts, but he also carved in wood, created a large number of etchings and worked in many media. His bronze portraits of Robert Burns and William Wallace are perhaps most famous, but much of his work was concerned with local scenes and people, and builds into a valuable social historical resource for the area.
He died in 1939.

There's lots of interest in local history and lots of local knowledge out there - so why not share it here?
Why not add a more detailed piece about the life of Robert Bryden? Or perhaps you'd like to start an article about another aspect of Coylton history? Why not start a timeline of important dates?
There must also be a wealth of wonderful photographs of old Coylton - maybe even some video of more recent events - and those are more than welcome here.
Remember, history doesn't need to be in black and white! It's good to bring back memories of just a few years ago, too.
